Another Round

Amid an ongoing midlife crisis, Martin, Tommy, Nikolaj, and Peter--a close-knit group of friends, colleagues, and high school teachers--find themselves faced with stale careers, failing marriages, and the cruel certainty of lost youth. Then, after a long, booze-fuelled night in town, the companions hit on the idea to keep themselves constantly semi-inebriated, inspired by an untried scientific theory claiming that when people maintain a golden 0.05% Blood Alcohol Concentration at all times, they are more relaxed, poised, and self-confident. So,... more...

Anny

Anny didn't become a sex worker till she was 46, but since then, she's kept returning to the streets of Prague, rain or shine, as cars pass by at a snail's pace. Helena Trestíková's film crew also kept returning to Anny in the years from 1996 to 2012. This is the modus operandi of the Czech director: she follows ordinary people for years. These longitudinal projects also indirectly capture the larger lines of history - in this case, the economic crisis years that sometimes prompt Anny to muse on communism.

Disco

Disco looks at contemporary Christian cults through the eyes of teen-aged Mirjam (Josefine Frida Pettersen). The film opens during a dance competition, where Mirjam is favored to win. But the atmosphere isn't about the pleasure of dance or movement or the music. It's about frenzied sexuality and the various competitors' desperate need for approval. (The effect of the scene is a lot like sticking your head in a pinball machine.) Mirjam's need is stoked by her mother - whose brother... more...

I Want You If You Dare

Single mother Martina raised twin girls, one of whom was born blind and the other with polio, leaving her disabled. Both children are now adults, and disabled Jana would love to leave her mother and live on her own in institutional living. And she would also like to experience sex, perhaps with a paid assistant. The documentary offers a brutally unsentimental view into the life of an impoverished rural family with two permanently disabled members. It delicately captures both everyday and exceptional situations, focusing mainly on the personal, emotional and relationship problems between the protagonists.
