A feature film depicting the critical 24 hours in the life of the famous Slovak figure skater Ondrej Nepela; intense and intimate personal drama of a young man, who, after years of dutiful representation of his totalitarian homeland longs to leave the golden cage of Czechoslovakia and become free. He wants to live and love without fear, that the revelation of his sexual orientation will make him a deviant and destroy everything he dedicated his life to. However, the regime strengthens its pressure on him in the moment of his highest vulnerability, using the dirtiest methods to make Ondrej conform to its cruel ultimatum.

(Bontonfilm)

This is not a concert. This is not a screening. Nothing like this has been attempted in Brno before, and after 23 April, it can never happen exactly the same way again. A 16-channel sound system fills the Czechoslovak Hussite Church with parallel sonic realities: field recordings, cello, rhythmic pulses, whispered textures, all running simultaneously. The performer operates the system live, choosing in real time which potentials collapse into the singular reality you hear. Cosmology, quantum mechanics, and ancient Gnostic philosophy provide the framework. The act of performance provides the moment. Six movements. 36 dimensions. Each lasting 90 seconds. Each one called into being from infinite possibility by the act of live performance. Six Gnostic recitals voiced by Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who, anchor each movement with texts thousands of years old. Live visuals by Alexandr Nemecz transform the church into something between a planetarium and a cathedral of sound. Duncan Hendy has spent years building this work. His practice spans collaborations with The Royal Society, BBC, and Smithsonian Institution. 23 April is the world premiere. Brno receives it first. You are not the audience. You are part of the experiment. Your presence completes the circuit between what could exist and what does. Duncan Hendy is a British-born, Czech Republic-based author, performer, sound designer and composer working at the intersection of sound, philosophy and performance. His projects include collaborations with The Royal Society, BBC, and Smithsonian Institution. 36 Dimensions of Sound synthesises cosmology, quantum mechanics, and Gnosticism into a sonic experience that transforms abstract theories into visceral, tangible events.
