The Cave

When a youth football team of 12 boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach is trapped deep inside a cave in Northern Thailand, thousands of volunteers and soldiers from around the world unite in a race against time to find them. Once the boys are found alive ten days later, the only way out is an impossible five-hour dive-swim that only expert cave divers could survive. In Ireland, airplane factory electrician and recreational cave diver Jim Warny gets the call:... more...

Black Peter

Petr is 17 years old and starts work. Incredibly (for Czechoslovakia in 1963) this is as a security worker against shoplifting in a busy self-service shop. His boss gives him pretty basic instructions, and Petr is pretty unsuccessful at work. He doesn't do much better at the dancehall either, and at home his bombastic father lectures him about how useless he is.

The Czech Year

The first feature length puppet film of Jiří Trnka poetically reveals folk customs and traditions of the Czech countryside that have been preserved for centuries. A kind of cinematic suite based on Aleš’s “Collection of National Folk Songs”, it is made up of six related parts, each set in a different season. A lyrical narrative acted out by simple puppets is underlain by the music of Václav Trojan with motifs from folk songs sung by the children of Kühn’s choir.

, Ten Meter Tower, De Potentia Dei

A ten meter diving tower. People who have never been up there before have to choose whether to jump or climb down. The situation itself highlights a dilemma: to weigh the instinctive fear of taking the step out against the humiliation of having to climb down. TEN METER TOWER is an entertaining study of the human in a vulnerable position.

Steam on the River

Like the steam that silently appears and then disappears over a flowing river, the life of every human is just as fleeting, and this particularly applies in the case of artists. The transience of their fame is the main topic of this documentary, which provides a glimpse into the lives of three aging jazzmen: trumpeter Laco Deczi, saxophonist Lubomír Tamaskovic, and contrabass player Ján Jankeje, who fled from the Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia to the West, where their stars shone alongside those of the world's famous musicians.

ZOO

Zoo on a tram. This film by a young author, Tereza Kovářová, reflects the familiar world only in the reflection of the windows on a train as it passes by, whilst inside a new ecosystem is growing and putting together random fates of people. During a single train ride the director is in a fresh way playing with to all of us familiar feelings of tension and anxiety over who is going to sit with us in our carriage. Because you never know.

The Noonday Witch

When Eliška decides to start again, she returns back to her husband’s birth village along with her young daughter. The village environment as well as the neighbours seem nice enough at first sight. New beginnings tend to have a dark side too, however. While this debut feature film by a 21 year old author Jiří Sládek clearly references the poetics of Czech horror stories, it is definitely not just a modern adaptation of Erben’s classic epic poem.

Bear Islands

In his latest documentary Bear Islands, filmmaker and writer Martin Ryšavý returns to Siberia, this time heading for the remote Nizhnekolymsky district. Images of a group of local men travelling through the snow-covered landscape to an abandoned weather station are interwoven with fragments revealing the history of the facility and its former residents. This poetic portrait of the region, a place where time has stood still, was one of five films nominated for a Czech Lion in the documentary category.

Beginnings

Twins Pavla and Densia and the several-months-older Adéla have reached adulthood within a juvenile detention center in Počátky. Now they await their inevitable journey to an independent life equipped with their vocational school diplomas and a mixture of pleasurable anticipation and fear. To make the transition less difficult, they begin at halfway houses – Adéla in Prague, Pavla and Denisa in Havlíčkův Brod. Their starting position is as outsiders – a position difficult to escape without family support. Nonetheless, the girls try, each in their own way and each with different results.
