Gugu's World

Eleven-year-old Gugu loves glam, nice dresses, dancing, and he also dreams of becoming a famous footballer. An unusual combination? Not in his world. He lives with grandma Dilma in the Brazilian countryside where he can be himself regardless of gender stereotypes and expectations. But his carefree world is threatened by his grandma’s ailing health and progressing Alzheimer’s disease. Saving her sound mind thus becomes a crucial mission, one that Gugu’s friends soon join as well. After all, it’s not just his beloved grandma’s fate that is at stake. If she ends up in a care facility, Gugu will have to move in with his conservative father. He would lose not only his home, but also the freedom to be himself without restriction or shame. This feel-good story of an exceptional bond across generations will make you go “awww” and take you to a world where kindness wins. A festival audience favourite, the film won both the Grand Prix and the Crystal Bear at Berlinale.
