This debut feature directed by Jiří Menzel received an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. That was back in 1968, but it’s by no means the only reason why it was chosen to be restored. The story takes place during the Protectorate and spiced up with Hrabal’s humour, it’s still remarkably sad and charming,even though it’s almost fifity years old.T
