Filmasia - In the Mood for Wong Kar-wai
Filmasia Presents aims to present audiences with the best of Asian cinema all year round. And when we talk about the best, we can’t start with anyone other than perhaps the most important figure in Hong Kong cinema. Admired by Quentin Tarantino, Wong Kar-wai is a filmmaker who prefers stories of the heart over the mind.
In his work, the Hong Kong painter of emotions, in the best tradition of local cinema, has never been afraid to change genres or cast the biggest stars. Since the early 1990s, he has directed art films that flirt with popular genre frameworks and feature the brightest pop and film stars of their time. We hereby present a selection of four of his most notable titles.
Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express is a cinematic love letter to desire that captures the mood and aesthetics of the 1990s like no other film. In Fallen Angels, the author takes audiences on a dynamic deconstruction of the hitman genre. Furthermore, the film Happy Together, a poignant depiction of queer romance, carries the implicit weight of the political climate in Hong Kong in 1997. The lineup will conclude with the profoundly layered drama In the Mood for Love, which the renowned film magazine Sight & Sound has ranked as the fifth greatest film of all time.
Embark on a journey of cinematic discovery, guided by the vision of Wong Kar-wai, and join us as we embark on the Filmasia Presents journey.
