The file on 9-year-old Benni calls her a “system crasher”. The problem child with the face of an angel does not fit into the structure of the German social services, she is full of uncontrollable fury against everyone in her world who poses an obstacle to her getting home to her mother. Her mother, however, cannot handle Benni even on her best behavior. Is there even just one person capable of giving the girl unconditional love? This riveting debut from director Nora Fingscheit, driven by a phenomenal performance by young actress Helena Zengel, is a story of inconsolable rage and the longing for real emotion, the limits of the children’s welfare system, and the boundaries of personal freedom.
